It may be Summer in Seattle, but no better time than now to ask my readers what Christmas merchandise would they want to see sold at their local Starbucks? The pictures in this blog post include just a few older cups and tumblers from a different Starbucks era.  In particular, the 12-ounce tumbler (dated 1996) was a favorite of mine for so long.  I remember buying it at the Starbucks on Northgate Way in 1996.  At that time, I remember picking the tumbler up, then putting it back down again, then picking it up, in that very typical Melody-indecision that grapples me at times.  I remember thinking that I could not decide if the artwork on it was just plain ugly, or incredibly creative.

Other than the obvious answer that every Christmas Starbucks should re-introduce Christmas Blend coffee, what would you like to see in the stores this Winter? You don’t have to think about just cups or tumblers, but rather whatever your favorite holiday item might be, even if it is a CD of holiday music that you  have purchased in the past. And this is an open thread, so please feel free to talk about ANYTHING!  If my readers want to keep talking about Iced Via, the new Starbucks in a hospital, decaf Casi Cielo, the new Frappuccino, or dark cherry, flavored coffee in the grocery stores, or anything related Starbucks, please feel free!  Should they bring back the gingerbread latte again? Or do you want to see Bearista Bears again? Or is  just more labor on your Christmas wish-list? ;)

DailyShotOfCoffee.com blogger reviews Starbucks Organic Shade Grown Mexico: Recently I was talking to coffee blogger Mike Crimmins who produces DailyShotOfCoffee blog and I asked him if he would like to do one of his famous coffee “reviews” for my site.  Mike produces a coffee blog where he features a true variety of coffee blends, and roasters, and he tastes each of the coffees and writes a review on it.  Mike is based out of Florida, and so when I read his blog, I often feel like I am taking a trip across the country and being introduced to coffee producers whom I otherwise would have never heard of.  There definitely are Starbucks in Florida, including one Clover-designated Starbucks, and so I asked Mike if he would pick out a Starbucks coffee and review it.

Since he picked out Organic Shade Grown Mexico, I wanted to remind my readers that this coffee is produced using both strict C.A.F.E. practices and Shared Planet Standards as well as certified organic.  I definitely recommend reading up on the basics of Starbucks Shared Planet.  Shade Grown Mexico was developed in the late 1990s as part of the initial cooperation and agreement between Conservation International and Starbucks.  It was through this partnership that Starbucks worked to develop formalized ethical sourcing guidelines.  Here’s the previous blog post on Shared Planet, which further talks about this amazing coffee:

And now here is Mike Crimmins’ coffee review of this very special Starbucks coffee:

Dear Starbucks, I’m Sorry

Even though it was more than a decade ago, it seems like just yesterday that you came in and setup shop a few blocks away from my college campus. It was love at first sight and I quickly forgot about the lackluster sources of caffeine back on campus.

It didn’t take me long to grow addicted to your calorie loaded drinks like venti Caramel Machiattos and grande Mocha Fraps. However, I hit a rough spot when I discovered why people called you “Charbucks” behind your back. It seemed like even your medium roast coffees were roasted to the point where there was more chafe than whole beans and the only flavor was smoky.

Then you gave me a new coffee to try, Starbucks Organic Shade Grown Mexico. Despite my fears and a name that seemed to be missing an “-ian” at the end, I opened up the bag and decided to open my heart back up to you.

When I opened your bag and saw golden brown beans, I wondered if maybe you had made something just for me.

A few minutes later, I filled my mug with a coffee that had an aroma that made me doubt what was going on. This wasn’t the over-roasted coffee that I had settled for in the past. It had a mild nutty aroma, with hints of fruits and chocolates underneath. There wasn’t a hint of the over-roasted, house fire aroma that I was expecting.

The aroma got my attention, but it was the taste that won me back to you. It was an exceptionally smooth nutty flavor. The aftertaste had a dry feeling that gave it character and made me look forward to the next sip. By now, thoughts of your burnt-to-the-crisp flavor had disappeared.

As an added bonus, you made the coffee shade grown (obviously), and organically grown.

I won’t even complain to you about the price. At 11.95 for 16 ounces, it’s a priced below the average price for many coffees that I’ve purchased that are just 12 or even 10 ounces.

If this was a Daily Shot Of Coffee blog post, I’d give it an above average score of 3.75. It’s by far my favorite Starbucks coffee that I’ve tasted in years and it made me want to go out and try even more of your coffee.

Mike Crimmins is the highly caffeinated blogger behind Daily Shot Of Coffee, an average joe’s guide to finding better coffee. You can also find him on Twitter at @ShotOfCoffee

Melody writing again:  Just a quick post-script to this blog post.  I actually know that Organic Shade Grown Mexico is one of the very lightest coffee roasts that Starbucks uses.  My understanding is that it is in the roasting oven an even shorter amount of time than House Blend!  It is amazing to me that people think that Starbucks does all dark roasts, because that plainly is false, and this coffee is a good example of a light roast coffee – I’m not even sure if it is pushed to a “full city” roast profile.

There are so many collectible Starbucks cards that it is time for a blog entry about them. I only wish I had been a little more aware of them before March of 2008.  At the 2008 annual Starbucks meeting of  Shareholders, Howard Schultz announced registered card benefits, and it was only then that I began to pay close attention to the myriad of Starbucks cards available in the stores.  On twitter and in pestering a few partners, I asked for help digging up Starbucks cards for this blog post. One partner in Canada sent me the Canadian card which I’ve featured for the icon for this blog post, which I hear was intended to celebrate the Olympics in Vancouver.

Other highly collectible cards that I’ve heard about, but do not have images for include the Paul McCartney, the Ichiro baseball, and the Ray Charles cards. Here at StarbucksMelody.com, I’ve talked about many cards and here is list of blog posts just featuring information on certain promotional or interesting cards:

List of previous StarbucksMelody.com blog posts on Starbucks cards:

And now for a few images (and if you look carefully, you can find Howard Schultz’s autograph three times below, though on two of them it has nearly worn off.  In this blog entry, Howard Schultz’s autograph appears four times in total: Three below, and the one beautifully framed Pike Place Card at the bottom of the blog post.):

Last but not least, this card displayed below is the “Pike Place store” card that one can only find at the store at 1912 Pike Place.  Below is one of several that Howard Schultz has signed for me, and I had it framed because it’s a beautiful rare card, and a nice legible signature, signed by Mr. Schultz on July 24, 2009, while he was visiting 15th Avenue Coffee and Tea. Currently this framed card is hanging in my office.  The framing was provided by Seattle Custom Framing – They do absolutely beautiful work, so if you’re in Seattle and need something framed, I recommend that you visit Seattle Custom Framing:

So what’s your favorite Starbucks Card?

One more quick thing: Previously I wrote a blog post about Starbucks registered card benefits and four common pitfalls.  It is still a good read as a basic introduction to four areas of continual confusion about the registered card rewards. I recommend it highly:

The Starbucks Card now has its own twitter profile. If you use twitter, please follow @StarbucksCard.

Thank you to numerous friends on twitter who helped me gather a number of the cards shown above.  I had too much help to list every person.  And thanks again to Molly at Seattle Custom Framing – She helped with the photography (and the framed card) on this blog post.

One of the cards above came from an SSC partner (upon my specific request for help in obtaining a particular card), so to be on the safe-side in terms of “disclosure” I am adding to this blog article the disclosure “Starbucks has provided coffee or other promotional consideration” to this blog content.  I hardly count one gift card from Starbucks as “promotional consideration” but it did come pre-loaded with $5 on it, and it did add to the blog post, so I am “disclosing” it.  If Starbucks wants to do more for me, they certainly can. ;)

Starbucks listens to the vegetarians

by Melody on June 24, 2010

Those who are vegetarians have been asking Starbucks for more vegetarian food options.  This is a common theme at My Starbucks Idea.  Coming soon (I believe on June 29, 2010) Starbucks is introducing two new food items, designed for the vegetarian diet.  I bet that even those of us who are not vegetarians are going to enjoy this.  The two new food items are the Hummus Plate and the Ratatouille Sandwich.  I believe that the Hummus Plate counts as “vegan” too, for the vegans.  However since the hummus involves cooked garbanzo beans, I guess this still isn’t the solution for the raw food enthusiasts at Starbucks.

The photo that accompanies this blog post features the Hummus Plate.  I don’t have any images for the new Ratatouille Sandwich, but I hear that it will feature roasted zucchini, eggplant, red peppers, spinach, and provolone on focaccia bread.  This sounds like a vegetarian item, though I don’t think it is “vegan”.

I’m sure I will try these items just to try them, but it’s not what I gravitate towards when I want food.  Nothing quite beats the Perfect Oatmeal – It’s hot, it’s the right size, and quick and easy.  I assume it’s vegetarian too, though that’s not why I buy it.  When I want real food at Starbucks, usually that means I get the Perfect Oatmeal, or sometimes the Vivanno Smoothie.  I assume the smoothie counts as vegetarian too.  But I might get these two new items for a change of pace too!  If anyone has any more information on them, I’m all ears.

Where are all the Starbucks Clover stores?

June 20, 2010

Have you ever wondered where every single Starbucks with a Clover brewer is located?  This blog post attempts to answer that question.  Once upon a time, Starbucks maintained a web site called www.CloverCrafted.com which listed every Clover Starbucks location.  That site has changed into a blog type site, and now no longer has its own [...]

June 14, 2010

John Moore’s new book is (actually written as a screenplay) about a coffee company called “Galaxy Coffee.”  It’s not hard at all to identify it as Starbucks.  It was a complete surprise to me, but John Moore sent me a preview copy of this new book.  He knows me from twitter and this blog, and [...]

A Starbucks store review from Orange County – Frappuccino land and palm trees

June 13, 2010

I had a long break in writing reviews of Starbucks stores, but I’m back at it again.  Here we are in Orange, California, at the Starbucks on Katella and Main. It’s near a Chili’s, a theater, an ice cream place, and a restaurant called King’s Fish. I arrived at 8:o6 pm on Sunday June 6th [...]
