Starbucks has been testing beverages called “Refreshers” in San Diego.  It was a widely-publicized test, so I had been aware of it long before discussing it with others on social media sites.  Through connecting with people on the blog and through twitter, a store manager in San Diego said, “Come to my store and try them!“  And to that I said, “Yes I will!“  It was an easy short trip.  I hopped on a plane; Stayed with family in Orange County, and then visited the Starbucks in San Diego with the beverage.

By way of a little background on this drink:  The beverage is called “Refreshers” and comes in two flavors: Cool Lime and Very Berry Hibiscus.  This was a limited “test” item in San Diego County only and scheduled to end at the end of this month.  The drinks have been so popular that the supplies of them are nearly depleted.  The store manager who hosted me set aside a little bit of the Refreshers mix so that there would still be some for my visit.  Between the two, the lime flavor was my favorite.

Refreshers are an iced drink made with the extract of green coffee.  A tall “Refreshers” drink has less than 15 mg of caffeine – less than a cup of green tea and far less than a cup of brewed coffee.  The price point of the tall lime Refresher was $2.50.  The weather was scorching hot in San Diego – reaching 100 degrees.  This Seattleite felt like she was going to die.  Refreshers were refreshing.

I want to talk a little bit about this store (Starbucks store #527 in San Diego).  It’s a physically small neighborhood store.  It exemplifies the kind of store that is fairly busy with many regular customers and partners who know their drinks and names.  According to the store manager, this store first opened August 8, 1992.  She’s been here a few months, and loves it.  While I was sitting chatting with her, a customer named Tom S. joined the conversation.  He’s been coming to this store for a decade.  Tom and I had a fun time talking too – By coincidence, he and I went to the same law school.  Tom S. wanted to share his passion for this store and said this, “I’ve been coming here for over ten years and I can objectively say it’s one of the best I’ve been to and I’ve been all around the U.S.

When I travel to stores to write store reviews and try beverages a variety of things can happen.  Sometimes District Managers greet me at the store.  Sometimes nothing happens at all.  I have to admit I’m totally touched and flattered that this store clapped when I got to the register!! Okay, that made me blush and happy at the same time.  I’m a little embarrassed to tell my readers that they clapped but it did make my morning.  The store knew I was arriving through my twitter conversation with the store manager.  A partner named Zack sat down with us for a few minutes and told us a little bit about the beverages.  You can hear Zack talk about the refreshers by going to this link here:

This store offers a chocolate croissant too as a pastry item – something not available in Seattle.  The store was clean and busy the entire time I sat in the lobby.  I noticed a fun chandelier hanging.  It’s an older store design but looks great.  Though my favorite thing about the store (in terms of the physical store itself) was the chalk art for the Toffee Mocha and The Pumpkin Spice Latte.  I love barista chalk art.

This was a great store visit.  A lot of fun to try something brand new with enthusiastic partners.  It was an easy two thumbs up and I’m sure it’s a store that makes Starbucks proud.

This trip to Southern California produced a total of three store reviews: (Eventually all of the links will work, but some of the posts below have not yet been published)

Also, if you like reading about test products click on this link for previous blog posts on test products:

Now is your chance to weigh in, and definitely if you’ve tried the Refreshers please tell me what you thought!

Thank you again to Kate, Zach, and everyone at this store – All of you made my visit absolutely perfect and wonderful.

(PS: I seem to be incapable of following a posting schedule for content, but I’m trying to get better at that. Sorry to be so off schedule. I had said Sundays and Wednesday. Well, I’m close. Today is Tuesday).

Starbucks Poems from the Land of Coffee

by Melody on September 26, 2010

A reader wrote to me that she had been cleaning through some things and discovered a little book of poetry, collected by Starbucks.  It is called “Poems from the Land of Coffee.”  The little book had been sent to her when she initially received her Duetto card.  For those that don’t recall, the Duetto Card was a Starbucks credit card launched in a partnership between Starbucks and Chase Bank.  The little book of poems is charming.  Coincidentally, Molly of Seattle Custom Framing recently framed for me a Starbucks picture which happens to be the exact picture on the front cover of the Starbucks Poems booklet.  A barista had been cleaning up a storage area for his store, and stumbled upon wall art no longer in use, and offered me this picture.  The anchor photo for this blog post is wall art from Starbucks.  As more and more Starbucks stores are transitioning to the ‘heritage’ or ‘green’ store design, I am seeing this particular picture less often in the stores.  I think it represents an older era of Starbucks store wall art.

Selected pages from the little booklet are below.  In particular, I love the Ethiopia poem.  It is about pages 18 and 19, so be sure to click on it.

Does anyone else remember this booklet?  I assume it dates from about five years ago.  The Duetto Visa Card is no longer available. I’ve seen a couple of different dates announcing the exact introduction of the Duetto Card but it seems it was initially launched in October 2003, and discontinued in February 2010.  An article discussing the discontinuation of the Duetto Visa Card is here.

This is an open thread. Chat about poetry, the Duetto Visa Card, or anything Starbucks-related.

Starbucks operates a partner store at their Seattle headquarters. This is a place where partners (employees) can go buy really cool stuff with the Starbucks logo all over it.  My understanding is that there is also a partner store online, though since I’m not partner, I have never seen it.  I don’t know if the online partner store carries the same items as the physical store inside the corporate headquarters.  If you love Starbucks enough that you want the famous green siren logo displayed on everything from the pens you write with to the watch you wear, then the partner store might make your toes curl with joy.

The stuff that is available for purchase in the partner store changes now and then, as promotions and seasons change.  You might find the logo on mugs, vests, book bags, laptop cases, pens, magnets, keychains, t-shirts, hoodies, and of course you can buy a green apron at the partner store.  You cannot buy the famous black apron coffee master at the partner store – The only way to get that is to earn it.  I assume that when Howard’s new book comes out, that too will be available at the partner store.  Maybe there will be signed copies there! Hahaha!  I guess if you work there you can always say, “Hey Howard would you sign my book.”

On two separate occasions I’ve had the incredible good luck to go shopping inside the partner store at the headquarters.  Trust me, I didn’t earn this. Obviously Starbucks can say “no” to my request to shopping at the partner store (well, obvious Starbucks can say “no” to anything I request of them).  But as good luck would have it, I bought a couple of things there.  It’s more like a mini shopping spree for me because I never know if I’ll ever be back to the partner store.  Of all the knick knacks and assorted items available at the partner store, it’s the pens that make me the most happiest.  I use a lot of pens all the time.  My briefcase is full of them.  The Starbucks logo-ed pens are distinctly mine.  When I’m up in court and I’ve left a pen laying around with the green Siren on it, I know it’s mine when I come back to it.  This week in court a friendly attorney came up to me, holding a Starbucks pen, and said, “Melody, this must be yours.”  That about says it all.

I don’t promise that any of the items shown below will be available in the partner store, if you’re a partner shopping there, because their inventory changes.  But just for fun, here are a few logo-ed Starbucks things:  (Thank you again to Molly of Seattle Custom Framing for taking these pictures)

Previously it’s been mentioned in the news that Starbucks would soon be ending customer service functions in Seattle.  For those who wonder what I mean, when customers call or email Starbucks with a comment or complaint, previously a representative in Seattle, located inside the headquarters, fielded this function and responded to the customer.  The New Mexico call center goes live on September 23, 2010.  From that point on, all calls are handled in New Mexico except if “escalated” to Seattle.  Escalation means that there is a problem or concern that requires the attention of a Seattle partner.  The customer service representatives in New Mexico work for a third party call service center and are not partners.

If you are looking to reach Customer Service, here’s the link with contact information:

I want to back up a minute and talk about the place where Starbucks came from in terms of Customer Service.  I can remember well over a decade ago, standing in my local Starbucks and picking up a customer service feedback form that said, “We’d love to hear your thoughts.”  I picked it up and wrote down that I would prefer to hear different music.  Probably, knowing me, I suggested more Tori Amos on the playlist.  Not too much later, in the mail came a free drink coupon thanking me for writing to them.  I was surprised.  All I did was ask for different music.  It wasn’t a complaint.

Starbucks Customer Service, at times, has created legendary stories.  I recommend everyone click on this link and listen to this story telling – Granted, I’m including this for fun, but Christine Ferrera’s storytelling of her relationship with Starbucks Customer Service Department is fabulous.  You’ll laugh and enjoy this:

^ Okay, that link is the highlight of this blog post.  It’s brilliance.

I’ve been worried that Starbucks Customer Service would lose its magic touch in the shift.  We all know the experience of calling a customer service representative, and speaking with someone who knows less about a corporation than the customer.  I also suspect there’s been some confusion in the transition from Seattle to New Mexico.  A twitter friend told me that she had written (via the email link) to Starbucks about not getting bold, and didn’t get any response. One quick tweet to the official Starbucks twitter account seemed to fix that.  I suspect that other resources such as MyStarbucksIdea.com and twitter can perhaps help fill in holes in the Customer Service experience.

Only time will tell if the change is a good one. Yes, I’m worried a little.  Just because you can cut costs in a particular area doesn’t mean you should.
