CNBC interviews Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz

CNBC airs a documentary on the coffee industry tomorrow, with a focus on Starbucks Coffee Company, and also Green Mountain Roasters, and it is simply called, “The Coffee Addiction.”  The program airs Thursday, September 29th at 9PM ET/PT.  Another link for more information on this program is here.

The documentary has an in-depth look at Starbucks, and includes interviews with Dub Hay, who is the SVP of Coffee and Tea at Starbucks.  Dub slurps his way through a lot of coffee every year at Starbucks.  The process of “cupping” coffee is a method of tasting coffee, and it is  most commonly what professional roasters do to create blends, check quality, and analyze the perfect production roast level.  Cupping also involves lots of slurping.  You can’t be shy about slurping if you love coffee!

CNBC sat down with Howard Schultz and interviewed him about the ups and downs (and ups again) of the business of Starbucks.  There is a tiny segment of the interview available through the CNBC You-tube page, and you can view that here:

The interview with Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz was conducted at the headquarters in Seattle, in the new “SODO 8″ store which is inside the SSC.  It is not open to the public but I do recognize the store.  If I were to date when the interview was recorded, I would guess either May or June of this year: one can see Three Region Blend at the registers, and that was a promo coffee sometime this summer.  (I don’t recall the exact dates of Three Region Blend.)

I recognize that this short You-tube segment of Howard has appeared on other blogs, but still it’s quite interesting to watch, so I thought I would share it here.  Sadly, I probably won’t be watching this documentary, although I think I would enjoy it.  I confess; I don’t even have cable.  I’ve had the good fortune of listening to Howard speak in person, and I have just a few audio files of him here.

Enjoy the short segment here, and tune in tomorrow to CNBC’s coffee documentary.

Another visit to the Starbucks coffee gear store.

If you are a Starbucks enthusiast, you might like the Starbucks coffee gear merchandise store at the headquarters.  This store is the place to go to for all kinds of logo-ed Starbucks stuff like t-shirts, magnets, pens, an umbrella, jackets, and more.  The array of stuff available at the store changes now and then, and so it’s already time for another episode.  It’s located at Starbucks Coffee Company, 2401 Utah Avenue South, 8th floor, Seattle, WA 98134.  It’s open Monday through Friday, normal business hours.

If you are a partner, you can purchase this merchandise online at http://www.starbuckscoffeegear.com.   That website is NOT for customers.  In fact, I have never seen what that site looks like beyond that landing page.  Also, please be aware that link to the online coffee gear store is for U.S. partners only.  I don’t think they ship internationally, or at least that is what I’ve been told.

However, if you’re just a lowly customer like me, then you hop on Link Light rail to the SODO station, walk down Lander Street to the headquarters, and purchase as much as is humanly possible to carry in one visit (and still be able to squeeze yourself back through the Link Light rail doors).

I went shopping at the merchandise store on the 19th and now I’m inviting you to come with me:

Here is the entrance!   You found it!

While you are in the reception area, be sure to pay attention to the walls.  The waiting area walls are painted with a timeline of significant moments in the history of the company:

Here are a few pictures from inside the store – I apologize that they’re a little blurry.  I had only my phone with me.  By the way, I have to say that I particularly like the new logo mouse pad!

So what is on your Starbucks coffee gear wish list? :)

Close ups of a few items (thank you Molly at Seattle Custom Framing for helping with the photos below):

This store is open to the public.  It is located on the 8th floor of the Starbucks reception area at the headquarters. You can visit the store Monday through Friday, normal business hours, at 2401 Utah Avenue South, 8th floor, Seattle, WA 98134.

Starbucks has partnered with “CFDA/ Vogue Fashion Fund” and Nordstrom to create Starbucks-inspired t-shirts.  The shirts are available online and at  select Nordstrom locations.  There is an official blog post about this here:

From the My Starbucks Idea blogs: Starbucks Designer Tees.

I decided to drop by my local Nordstrom on Pine Street in downtown Seattle, and get a close look at the t-shirts and the displays.  If you’re looking for the shirts, they are in the via C department at Nordstrom.  (A very helpful sales associate at Nordstrom, with a major in journalism so I learned, made sure that I knew that the department is “via C” and not “Via C.”)

The display and correct department were not hard to find at all.  There is a large display right near the escalators showing off these t-shirts.  By the way, the three t-shirt designers were Sophie Theallet, Billy Reid, and Alexander Wang.  It appeared to me that the solid white shirt by Alexander Wang, and the black shirt that has “71″ on it (by Billy Reid) were styled and cut as men’s shirts.  The Sophie Theallet shirt  and that the other black Billy Reid shirt (the one with the Starbucks siren on the left shoulder) appeared to be women’s shirts.  Of course, I recognize that t-shirts are t-shirts, and anyone can buy any one of the four they like!

The t-shirt that appealed to me the most was the black Billy Reid shirt with the siren on the shoulder:

I tried the black Billy Reid t-shirt on, and it seems to run just a bit small.  Nordstrom did not have my size available in store (they seemed to have just a handful of shirts) and so I ended up ordering the t-shirt with the assistance of the sales associate.  She was incredibly helpful, and even waived the shipping fee for me.

Here’s another photo of the display:

I also thought the Sophie Theallet shirt was nice, and the tie on the back of it was a nice feminine touch.  Each shirt has a small rectangular booklet-tag which provides just a brief introduction to the designer:

Also, each little booklet has a free drink coupon in it!  (I wonder if any partners have seen those used in the stores yet?)

I have to be brutally honest here:  I think the price tag is a little steep for these t-shirts.  I recognized that these are designer shirts, and placed in a Nordstrom department where the typical via C customer would be accustom to spending a few hundred on a single sweater, or pair of pants, but for my budget, this was a touch expensive.  In looking around at other items in the same area of Nordstrom, the t-shirts were priced at the same scale as all the other beautiful high-style designer merchandise in via C.  Still, $85 is more than I would normally spend for a t-shirt.  And I totally recognize that there IS a whole category of folks who will spend that for designer wear, but it’s a bit much for me.

In addition, this blog post has a boring legal section to it too!  I received one of these t-shirts already as a gift from someone at the headquarters.  I think that the Federal Trade Commission requires me to disclose any products or services in connection with a blog article.  I received a free t-shirt.   Technically, I think the intent of the FTC is that the requirement is disclosure of “compensated endorsements” and I didn’t really review the shirt that was given to me, and I did not do a “product review” at the behest of Starbucks, but just to be safe, I’m disclosing that I received a free Alexander Wang shirt.  In any case, I’ve probably just caused someone at the SSC to wince a little by referring to the shirts as expensive.  They are beautiful shirts though!

So what do you think?  Have you seen these shirts at your local Nordstrom?

From the StarbucksMelody.com mailbag…

by Melody on September 22, 2011

Lots of people email me.  Anyone can click on the “contact me” tab and send me an email.  I really do read all my email, though I don’t actually reply to every single one that I receive.  I wish I could write everyone a beautiful reply, but I get enough email that I don’t have quite that much time.

I have been thinking about doing a column – perhaps a bi-weekly feature – calling out a particular question in an email, or a particular comment.  Not sure if this will really work, but this week is the first week that I am giving it a try.

Once again, email me by clicking here.

So here’s the first of the “From the StarbucksMelody.com mailbag” emails:

Hi Melody, I’m a partner barista in district xx. I’d like to know what other stores are doing for barista recognition. Partners who are taking the on the job of barista recognition could share ideas and ways to recognize those who are on the front line each day. What are the possibilities?
Are there any partners who want to chime in the comments about the things that you do recognize partners?  I have to say that the things that come to my mind are the more obvious things like, “Partner of the Quarter” and such.  In previous episodes about Starbucks t-shirts, we saw that Starbucks used to do things like “Manager of the Quarter” t-shirts.  (I assume there is the same thing out there for other store-level employees.)  I think it is a great question.
If you readers think this is a bad idea for a regular column, please tell me!  I’m willing to gamble this could be an interesting regular column.  And please post in the comments, if you have any thoughts on partner recognition ideas.  The next “From the StarbucksMelody.com mailbag” column will be October 6, 2011.  Please email me now if you wish to submit a question to be posted on the blog.
(Edit:  This column will have both customer-focused ideas and partner-focused ideas.  Either one is fine.  I just happened to start out with something a little more partner-focused.)

Starbucks Finest Tea

September 21, 2011
Thumbnail image for Starbucks Finest Tea

Today (9-19-11) I had the chance to visit the Starbucks Support Center (the headquarters), and I noticed something on a shelf, in a corner:  a few tins labeled, “Starbucks Finest Tea” caught my eye.  I picked them up to get a better look.  The packaging was absolutely beautiful.  So this was Starbucks tea long before Tazo was [...]

Have you tried the Apple Crumble Frappuccino in North Carolina?

Thumbnail image for Have you tried the Apple Crumble Frappuccino in North Carolina?

Starbucks is testing an Apple Crumble Latte and Apple Crumble Frappuccino in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Has anyone here tried it?  I think it sounds better as a cold drink idea than a hot drink.  Of course I reserve judgment until I have given it a try! This morning I was tweeting with twitter-friend “NationHahn,”  and [...]

Tanzania coffee and Starbucks and Origin Trips

September 17, 2011

In the United Kingdom, Starbucks offers a “Tanzania” coffee.  This wonderful offering is a seasonal coffee that comes back regularly to the UK Starbucks market.  I actually had a bag of it about one year ago too.  It is washed-processed with a big juicy flavor, and a light lemony acidity.  I owe a big thank [...]

A unique Starbucks in Orange, California – Store #5511

September 16, 2011

On August 28, 2011, I dropped by this Starbucks in “Old Town” Orange, near the Orange Circle.  It’s an area that I know well.  I lived in this neighborhood once upon a time, long before “Starbucks” was a part of my vocabulary.  There is a historic bank building on Chapman Avenue that now houses a [...]

Thumbnail image for The butter coffee tasting: Starbucks Anniversary Blend

Mikey, aka “Mr. Opportunity*,” hosted a fabulous coffee tasting at the Olive Way Starbucks tonight.  I attended, along with a large crowd of nearly a dozen people, some partners, some not.  Mikey made a couple of French presses of Anniversary Blend, and prepared a guided tasting note sheet.  We walked through the traditional four steps [...]
