Via

Starbucks has begun selling Via Ready Brew in a jar.  As far as I know, only Colombia Via and Italian Roast Via are available in a jar, but I assume that soon more varieties will become available.  The jar is a fairly small size and on the lid it states that there are 24 servings in it.  I notice that the packaging is non-translucent plastic packaging, likely to prevent any flavor changes due to sun exposure.  (That can happen to instant coffee in a glass jar, I think.)

This larger packaging is something that customers have long requested on MyStarbucksIdea.com.  For those who don’t remember, right now Via comes packaged in single serve packaging, where one single stick of Via makes an 8 ounce cup of coffee.  I have numerous previous blog posts about Via.  Click here to go back and look at previous articles on Via.

Here’s an example of the customer requests on MyStarbucksIdea.com for Via in a tin or jar:

I realize that some people are reading this confused and thinking, ‘Where this product is for sale?‘  This product is already for sale in the UK and Ireland.  Let me say, I have >no clue< why or how the UK received this product before the United States.  What I can say is that I highly doubt Starbucks is going to keep this as a product exclusive to that market.  That just would be so unlike Starbucks!  They seem intent on spreading Via Ready Brew everywhere! ;) (Who knows.  Maybe Starbucks will prove me wrong, but I’m willing to bet that it’s coming soon to more markets.)

On a personal note, I almost have mixed feelings about this.  I feel like a lot of the magic of Via is in the packaging.  I really love the ease and convenience of a stick of Via.  What a hassle-free easy way to make a single cup of coffee at home.  At it’s always fresh because it’s unopened until the moment of use.

Don’t laugh, but I would rather see the flavored Via products in a jar than the regular Via varieties.  I use the caramel and vanilla flavored Vias as ice cream toppings, and it might be nice to scoop it out.  It seems like it will be almost impossible for Starbucks to really control the quality of the flavor of the cup of coffee with Via in a jar.  The risk here is that a customer will buy a jar of it, open it up and have a cup, place it on his or her kitchen shelf and forget about it, and then months and months later, and use it again.  The second use of it, many months later, may have some deterioration of flavor quality because it’s been exposed to oxygen.  I’m not really sure how this packaging in a little jar will hold up weeks and months after its first opened.  Nonetheless, this packaging will probably make people who cook with Via very happy campers!  I just was chatting with a barista the other day that says he puts the Colombia Via in his favorite home-made chili recipe!  Cooking with Via is a big thing!

I owe a big thank you to my twitter follower @Sbutler66 who generously offered to mail me this jar.

I took a photo of the Via near a 3-ounce cup so that you can size-up how small this packaging really is.

What do you think of Via in a jar?

Via Ready Brew knit cap

Via Ready Brew knit cap

Everybody needs a Starbucks Via Ready Brew cap!

This is episode #2 of ‘Starbucks schwag’.  ‘Schwag’ is the cool stuff that Starbucks produces that is rare and hard to come by but kind of cool (and a tiny bit dorky too).  Quite recently, a Starbucks Via Ready Brew knit cap fell into my hands at the bargain sales price of $15.00. I wanted to share my find with all of you.

Episode #1 of Starbucks schwag was my blog entry featuring a Starbucks lunchbox and other items. The link to that post is here.

I’m not totally sure why Starbucks produced these gray and orange caps.  The gossip I heard was that only a limited number of these caps were made.  There were solid orange caps used in a Via Ready Brew video on Starbucks’ you tube profile, but these gray ones are not the same item. Nonetheless, it’s an authentic Starbucks Via item, and the kind of thing that makes me giggle a little bit to wear.

It’s a toss up which is more beautiful: Via earrings or a Via cap? But since I wear more caps than earrings, I’m going to have to go with the cap!  The previous blog entry on the Via earrings featured earrings produced by either passionate customers or baristas.  If you’re looking to buy one of these caps for yourself, drop by 15th Avenue Coffee and Tea. I don’t know if they still have them but it’s the only place that I’ve seen them around.

On a related note, Starbucks customers on mystarbucksidea.com often ask for more Starbucks branded clothing items.  How do all of you feel about that?

Personally, I think clothing items are hard to merchandise. If you’ve ever spent hours with a folding board working in retail, you’ll think twice about Starbucks ever selling logo t-shirts in every store.  I’d hate to see Starbucks more associated with t-shirts than bags of coffee beans.  Here is an example of what I mean from mystarbucksidea:

Chicago Via Earrings 1

Chicago Via Earrings 1

This is Via Ready Brew Earrings Episode #2:  Does anyone remember my previous blog entry on the “Via earrings and enthusiasm” at a downtown Seattle Clover Starbucks? Well, a regular reader of this website was inspired to make her own Via earrings (she is a customer!) and gave them as gifts to her local baristas!! I think that is so cool! I just wonder if decaf Via earrings will be coming soon too. ;-) Though I don’t normally like to make so many blog posts back to back, I wanted to share the Via enthusiasm once more … And moreover, this is such a great example of people connecting together at a Starbucks and sharing their creative talents! Chime in on your Via enthusiasm or whatever Via stories!

Via Ready Brew earrings

Via Ready Brew earrings

When I first heard Starbucks was launching instant coffee, I was skeptical and suspicious. After trying it, hot and cold, I came around. I don’t know how it happened, but I became a Via believer.  Those mornings where I didn’t have enough time for a morning Starbucks run became Via mornings, and I was glad to have my emergency sticks of Via in my office.  My first blog entry on Via was a store review of the North Bend Drive-Through Starbucks Via Challenge.

This morning, I saw some fabulous Via enthusiasm at a downtown Seattle Starbucks: Via earrings! I love it! I thought I’d share the Via earrings picture. I promised the barista it would be just her ear all over the internet and not her face, and all I had with me was my cell phone so the quality of the pics isn’t that great.  I asked about the earrings and learned that the partners got together and made a whole bunch of them so that every barista would have Via earrings to wear!  That’s so cool! (Though I assume the guys in the store aren’t wearing them.)

Enjoy!

Store Review: North Bend, Washington & Melody’s Via Taste Challenge

October 4, 2009

This weekend is the Via Taste Challenge weekend, and so I can’t pass up this opportunity to visit a new store and do the challenge.  For those who don’t know, VIA™ Ready Brew is an instant coffee in individualized serving packages. Each packet makes 8 to 10 ounces of coffee. (10 may be a little [...]
