Starbucks has been testing a new espresso machine for a long time: This new machine is the Mastrena II, and it is beginning to show up to in a large number of stores.
The machine has a low profile, three coffee bean hoppers and other features making it an improvement on the earlier versions of the Mastrena espresso machines. I’ve heard baristas say to me things like, “I like that I can pull 3 shots at once – it saves time.” And I’ve heard baristas say, “The coffee ground drawer is bigger so it doesn’t need to be emptied as often.” The big obvious plus is the three hoppers. No more putting the blonde roast into the decaf espresso hopper.
Best of all, some baristas have raved at how the shots are improved.
I don’t know how much of the above is true, but it sure seems like the new Mastrenas are an improvement over the older ones. The shear fact that it has 3 hoppers is a big win.
It’s pretty sleek looking too.
What do you think? Have you seen these at stores near you?

How about a better syrup? The extract/sugar is what my 4yr old would try….not SB. Do you know who makes that syrup. That WAS the whole point of starbucks. I only got one thing at startbucks, peppermint latte. One day I was tricked. I thought the barista gave me the wrong drink. But nope, the peppermint syrup (that I now wish I would have bought a case of) is no more?!!!! WTH Starbucks?!!! Without warning. Terrible taste, havent been back in a loooong time.
Can’t wait to see how it tastes!
The newest store in area has them and they are indeed pretty nice. I think it does pull a tastier shot, but we’ve also had quite a bit of trouble with them. The store hasn’t even been open one month and we’ve had to call them both in on different occasions at least twice.
I would be curious to try as I am not a fan of the current espresso consistency on the current machines. When I was a partner, I could ensure quality but know it’s inconsistent.
I want it all for my store
